Ms. Mindy Mayman, Partner, Richter Family Office; Mr. Greg Moore, Vice President, Richter Family Office; Mr. Danny Ritter, CPA, CA, CFA, Partner, Advising Representative, Richter Family Office
Description: The era of extraordinary interest rates since the Great Recession of 2008 has fueled broad gains in asset prices globally – cheap money and the search for return have compressed risk premiums and elevated asset prices. But the prospect of a slowdown in global growth now leaves few options for monetary authorities to stimulate economic demand and the excess returns that investors can expect for assuming risk are compressing. This potential paradigm shift will create unique challenges moving forward as investors will either need to settle for lower returns or continue to elevate the risk in their portfolios. Now put that thought into the context of multi-generational wealth management. Largely, the wealth management business has adopted theoretical approaches which have been relied upon by large institutional pools of capital who generally only have a singular need – to fund long term obligations. However, the unique needs of a multi-generational family approach to portfolio construction has always called for a differentiated asset allocation framework. Families face competing needs and goals within their multi-generational portfolios and these are better addressed through a sound “risk-allocation” framework as opposed to what Modern Portfolio Theory can deliver.
  • This session will speak to the unique needs and characteristics of managing a family legacy and will address the benefits of a well-designed “risk-allocation” approach to asset allocation.
  • The intention will be for participants to understand the nuances of family wealth vs institutional capital and how a different framework and mindset can help you maximize the potential of reaching your family’s long-term investment goals.

The vast majority of estate transitions fail within the context of the goals and wishes of benefactors. Increased estate litigation, breakdowns in family unity, or a loss of self-confidence or quality of life among receiving heirs are all symptoms of poor estate transitions. What are the hallmarks of success when it comes to passing a financial legacy across generations? This panel will explore some of the strategies that have worked to help engage and empower multi-generational families and ensure that financial legacies continue to provide opportunities and support to future heirs.

Gluskin Sheff  subsequently grew to become one of the prominent names in Canadian wealth management.
